Credible Faith with Dr. Paul Daniel Larson - November 2016

Hey, everyone!!!

San Antonio, TX

I would like to ask a favor. I have a Credible Faith English Youtube channel, a Credible Faith Spanish Youtube channel, and a Credible Faith Portuguese Youtube channel. Youtube requires 100 subscribers to change the channel's web address from some long string of characters that are not easily memorized to what one would like the web address for the channel to be. If enough of those receiving the monthly email subscribe, I can change the channel web address to something easily memorized. Would you go to the Portuguese Youtube channel, the Spanish Youtube channel, and the English Youtube channel and subscribe?

I make this request given that I am working towards producing English, Spanish, and Portuguese apologetics videos, in addition to Credible Faith podcasts. I would like to have an easily memorizable channel web address to which I can direct people if they would like to watch some of the videos in their language.

Me with Keith Getty at Grace Presbyterian Church, Peoria, IL

This Saturday, November 5, will be the annual meeting of the board of directors of Credible Faith. After that meeting, I will be going to San Antonio, Texas, and attending some of the annual Evangelical Theological Society conference and some of the annual Society of Biblical Literature conference there. I will also attend some of the Evangelical Textual Criticism Blog Dinner and an Institute for Biblical Research meeting. It will be a good time for seeing old friends, remaking contact with acquaintances, and meeting new people.

On the personal and family side, I went to a Keith and Kristyn Getty concert at Grace Presbyterian Church on October 14, and much of the concert was great. I have memorized at least almost all of the lyrics and melody of 13 Getty songs in my devotional life, and it was great to get to meet Keith Getty.

PRAYER REQUESTS
1. Fundraising. Financially, one of the hardest seasons for a ministry is the beginning. Please pray that God would bring monthly supporters alongside Credible Faith. Credible Faith is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization and donations are accordingly tax-deductible in the US as permitted by law.

2. Ministry Opportunities. Pray that doors would be opened for ministry in churches and on campuses and for relationships to be formed that would be mutually beneficial for ministry in those places.

Have a great month!!!

Sincerely,
Paul

Quote of the Month

A quote from F. F. Bruce's book, 'The New Testament Documents: Are They Reliable?', pp. 10-11:

The evidence for our New Testament writings is ever so much greater than the evidence for many writings of classical authors, the authenticity of which no one dreams of questioning. And if the New Testament were a collection of secular writings, their authenticity would generally be regarded as beyond all doubt. It is a curious fact that historians have often been much readier to trust the New Testament records than have many theologians.[NOTE17] Somehow or other, there are people who regard a 'sacred book' as ipso facto under suspicion, and demand much more corroborative evidence for such a work than they would for ordinary secular or pagan writing. From the viewpoint of the historian, the same standards must be applied to both. But we do not quarrel with those who want more evidence for the New Testament than for other writings; firstly, because the universal claims which the New Testament makes upon mankind are so absolute, and the character and works of its chief Figure so unparalleled, that we want to be as sure of its truth as we possibly can; and secondly, because in point of fact there is much more evidence for the New Testament than for other ancient writings. ... Perhaps we can appreciate how wealthy the New Testament is in manuscript attestation if we compare the textual material for other ancient historical works. For Caesar's Gallic War (composed between 58 and 50 [BCE]) there are several extant MSS, but only nine or ten are good, and the oldest is some 900 years later than Caesar's day. Of the 142 books of the Roman History of Livy (59 [BCE]-AD 17) only thirty-five survive; these are known to us from not more than twenty MSS of any consequence, only one of which, and that containing fragments of Books iii-vi, is as old as the fourth century. Of the fourteen books of the Histories of Tacitus (c. AD 100) only four and a half survive; of the sixteen books of his Annals, ten survive in full and two in part. The text of these extant portions of his two great historical works depends entirely on two MSS, one of the ninth century and one of the eleventh. The extant MSS of his minor works (Dialogus de Oratoribus, Agricola, Germania) all descend from a codex of the tenth century. The History of Thucydides (c. 460-400 [BCE]) is known to us from eight MSS, the earliest belonging to c. AD 900, and a few papyrus scraps, belonging to about the beginning of the Christian era. The same is true of the History of Herodotus (c. 488-428[BCE]). Yet no classical scholar would listen to an argument that the authenticity of Herodotus or Thucydides is in doubt because the earliest MSS of their works which are of any use to us are over 1,300 years later than the originals.
